“Bedsheets are the most important thing in the world,” says Bunny Williams, AD100 Hall of Famer who has been decorating Upper East Side apartments and Connecticut country homes for more than 40 years. Because if you’re going to spend one-third of your life between the sheets, shouldn’t they feel fabulous? Naturally, one person’s gravelly linen duvet cover is another person’s practically silk sateen.

Thus began our journey to find the best bedsheets. No one has the time nor the attention span for the dozens of products and advertisements that pop up on Google, so we sought to come up with a simple list of 20 very good options ourselves.

Sateen sheets can take your bed to resortlike heights. In the case of Brooklinen, they’re made of long-staple cotton, making these sheets soft and durable (a plus if you don’t have a linen cabinet to store extras). The pitfall of sateen is that many manufacturers use chemicals to get the textile’s classic slip and luxe sheen. “I can confidently say that I have tested at least 100 different sheets in my career and these are my favorite,” says Samlin. As you’d expect from sateen, these are supersoft (and get softer over time), but notably, they have a very subtle luster that sets them apart: “I have always been partial to a sateen sheet versus a percale sheet, but tend to be turned off by how shiny sateen can be.” She calls these the perfect blend of luxury and ease — which is the same way we’d describe all the bedding offered by Quince. Anishka Clarke, co-owner of Ishka Designs, says that after using one specific set of bamboo-derived linens for a large project, she’s never going back. Her find? BedVoyage, which uses all-organic viscose from bamboo. “The quality of the product is excellent. If you’re a hot sleeper, the notion of getting eight hours a night is, in a word, absurd. Coquette, ’80s dress shirt, or Doên’s foray into bedding? The statement will be loud and somewhat clear, whatever aesthetic ruffles your bedsheets. Ever Lasting is a newcomer to the scene; you may have seen its videos of perfectly undone bedrooms targeting you (or your Gen Z sister) across social media. While commenters say the bedding can take a while to ship out, the brand does offer regular promo codes, including a student discount. You know a bed sheet is good when you lay down and want to start doing “snow” angels because the material is so soft. Bed Thread is also 100 carbon neutral, o you can also feel joyous you’re purchasing an eco-friendly option. However, having to line dry so much fabric might be tedious for some, but luckily, you can tumble dry it but not in high temperatures.

“Material is the first major consideration when you want to refresh your bed sheet set,” says Hannah Samlin, senior buyer for home textiles at Quince. Sateen should feel smooth and almost silky, flannel should be fuzzy, percale should feel crisp and cool, and linen should remind you — at first — of your dog’s paws, then turn into your indoor cat’s paws over time.

If you’re into clean(er) living or a more sustainable lifestyle, you’ll probably want to prioritize two popular certifications. There’s Oeko-Tex (which assures that no harmful chemicals, like formaldehyde and other hell-no’s, are in the product) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which makes sure the raw materials to make the textiles are at least 70 percent certified-organic fibers).

Samlin says the material you choose will have a huge impact on regulating body temperature and your overall comfort level while you sleep. Ruthie Osswald, a designer at Brooklinen, adds that it’s important to also note the type of sleeper you are, along with the current or upcoming season: “A cold sleeper going into the winter months would benefit from purchasing a pair of flannel sheets, while a hot sleeper might prefer a classic percale or linen weave, especially in the summer months.”

“This is completely a matter of personal preference and in my (biased) opinion, more is more!” says Samlin. She points out that combining textiles can allow for more color combinations and gives you a chance to make your bed more you. “Since sheets (and especially pillowcases) need to be laundered more often than your quilt or comforter, it’s a great way to try a new fabric or a pop of color in your favorite fabric without re-doing your whole room,” she notes.
